Plot /Oslo inviteres til å bli kjent med Frida Orupabos kunstnerskap og utstilling sammen med kurator Owen Martin. Omvisningen holdes på engelsk.

Frida Orupabo (f. 1986 i Sarpsborg, Norge) arbeider med både fysiske og digitale kollasjer.

Hun har samlet på bilder hele livet og henter materiale fra populærkultur og koloniale bildearkiver. I verkene sine tar hun utgangspunkt i personlige og kollektive opplevelser knyttet til identitet, kjønn, familierelasjoner og rasisme.

Gjennom nyproduserte verk viser utstillingen On Lies, Secrets and Silence Orupabos unike kollasjteknikk. Sammen med video og større romlige installasjoner presenterer den en ny retning i kunstnerens praksis. I denne utstillingen undersøker Orupabo hjemmet, vårt mest private og intime rom. Subtile endringer forvandler kjente miljøer og relasjoner fra trygge og imøtekommende, til fremmede og ubehagelige.

Flere av arbeidene hennes kan minne om papirdukker, bygget opp lag for lag og løst festet sammen. I utstillingen vil man møte ulike kunstformer som papirkollasjer, videoer og skulpturer som har til felles at de er laget ved å manipulere, klippe, re-arrangere og repetere bilder. Orupabos vakre og nedtonede fargepaletter står i kontrast til det kraftfulle visuelle materialet og de sensitive temaene hun jobber med.

Curator-led walkthrough in Frida Orupabo’s exhibition On Lies, Secrets and Silence.

Welcome to this exclusive Plot/Oslo walkthrough with curator Owen Martin. The walkthrough is conducted in English. 

Frida Orupabo (b. 1986 in Sarpsborg, Norway) works with both physical and digital collages. On Lies, Secrets and Silence presents her most extensive exhibition to date.

Orupabo has collected images all her life, and her incisive work unearths violences in historic photographic and popular archives as well as contemporary digital media.  Intertwining personal and shared, collective experiences, her works relate to identity, gender, family relationships and racism.

Alongside works using her unique collage technique, On Lies, Secrets and Silence includes large-scale images displayed as spatial installations and a video installation. The exhibition’s starting point is our most private and intimate space—the home. The complex relationships that are contained within the domestic sphere, central to our everyday lives and the creation of identity, are probed by Orupabo. Through subtle changes, familiar environments and relationships are transformed from safe and welcoming, to strange and uncomfortable.

Several of her works are reminiscent of paper dolls, built up layer by layer and loosely attached together. In the exhibition, you will encounter various art forms such as paper collages, videos and sculptures, which have in common that they are made by manipulating, cutting, re-arranging and repeating images.  A muted and beautiful color palette contrasts with her powerful and sometimes uncomfortable imagery.
